Sweeto Cheeto
Workout for Over the Rainbow Stakes.
This was going to be a tough race. She was worried. Really worried. She had been pretty confident of the horse's capabilities until this year. For some reason the colt has been unable to find his stride. It was unusual, especially considering his bloodlines. He was the son of Kentucky Derby winner Like A Cheetah and Hall of Famer Sweet Stalker. His grand sire was Night Stalker so how could you go wrong?
Kirsten was puzzled for sure. The colt had been a promising prospect since he was able to walk. What was going on? Oh well, maybe he just needed more work and more experience. Then maybe he will perk up in a race. This race coming up for him might not be the race that will be his second win but it was worth a try.
At least the race was a mile. That was one thing in their favor. Cheeto rocks the mile races. Now if only he can get his feet under him quickly enough to take out the competition.
Kirsten pointed Cheeto towards the rail and let him into a gallop. The colt went on steadily. He knew what he had to do. Today Kirsten was going to change things up though. He was going to be worked faster and faster with each furlong until he tires. A good blowout to see him change gears until he reaches his full potential.
She released her hold on the reins and let the colt run all out. He hesitated for just a second and then took off. Normally Kirsten would keep a hold on the reins to make sure he had something left for the end. Not today.
She encouraged him to pick up speed with each furlong and he obeyed to the best of his capacities. At four furlongs he seemed to not have another gear. They were flying around the turn. There was no way he was going to go any faster. Kirsten bent down and started to whisper in his ear. He slowed for a fraction and then kicked it up yet another notch.
Finally Kirsten pulled up the sweating colt and gave him a pat. He did good. He was able to pick up another gear. Kirsten couldn't wait to see what his times might be this time.
